The project required me to create a miniature magazine, or “minizine,” on any topic I chose. My scope included using only my original images, writing two articles (one featuring an interview), designing two ads (for Johnson & Wales University and Rhody Hen Cafe), and producing one creative piece. Naturally, my love of cats drove my topic choice, and with fellow cat enthusiasts in my friend group, securing an interview was very easy. This decision set the stage for the creative process that followed.

research

  • conducted interview

  • built moodboard

  • collected branding materials for JWU

sketching

  • sketched layout thumbnails

  • drafted masthead design

Bringing all these efforts together, this minizine combines my passion for design and, most importantly, cats! I was given the freedom to develop the concept, design, and execution, resulting in a zine that reflects both my skills and interests.

process

design

  • crafted masthead in Adobe Illustrator

  • created page spreads in Adobe InDesign

  • stylized images in Adobe Photoshop

This project challenged my skills in layout design and image editing. With the concept established, I approached the layout by spending considerable time sketching and deliberating over what felt right for my minizine. After much trial and error, I developed a layout for my articles that felt fun yet practical for communicating my information. Incorporating fun display fonts, organic elements, and stylized images really helped me push my style through.

print

  • packaged file

  • print, cut, and binded minizine

feedback

  • received recognition for “best ad design” and “best cover design”
