Monster Mash is a vintage-style display typeface created by John Roshell. My main goal for this project was to create a typebook that functioned well in providing the proper information, but also kept the viewer engaged with fun graphic elements.

research

  • collected information on typeface designer

  • gathered inspiration from old monster comic books and movie posters

sketching

  • sketched layout thumbnails

Following the completion and presentation of this project, I received enthusiastic feedback on the style and execution of my book. This response gave me great confidence in my ability to create a successful informational typebook that kept my audience engaged.

process

design

  • created character illustrations in Adobe Illustrator

  • organized pages in Adobe InDesign

To achieve these goals, I was required to include a bio of the typographer, information about the typeface, a type anatomy diagram, the different font styles, and two design quotes matching the book's style. Because Monster Mash is reminiscent of vintage sci-fi horror films, I selected this theme for my book, using halftone graphics typical of media from that era. Wanting to challenge myself further, I created original illustrations of classic horror characters. After including all the required information, I had limited page space remaining. Therefore, I illustrated Frankenstein’s monster and a scared woman as the main subjects on the front and back covers to draw attention.

print

  • packaged file

  • print, cut, and binded typebook

feedback

  • received recognition for an aesthetically pleasing design style
